WHO Progressive Rock Thread

With the news that ex-Hammer Alan Devonshire is a massive progressive rock fan, I thought we should share West Ham prog rock fan comments here.
So, how are we with Pink Floyd and their love of Alvin Martin, and how happy are we with Yes?
What about Gentle Giant?
Genesis were great and Phil Collins loved Liam Brady but was that because he was an Arsenal fan?
Marillion were part of the neo-progressive movement and it is well know that Fish followed Hearts, who we all know are the Scottish West Ham.

Agree with you about Anathema. They have done some great stuff over the years.
Never been able to get into Big Big Train.

I live some of the old prog bands but some of the newer/current bands under the prog banner are too good to miss.
Worth checking out:
ANATHEMA
(widescreen cinematic anthems- been described as "this generations pink Floyd" although not really like the at all!)
BIG BIG TRAIN
(very english, early genesis flavored but very contemporary also)
PINEAPPLE THIEF
Great tunes - Early Radiohead influence is very apparent
RPWL
(from Germany - but don't let that put you off!)
RIVERSIDE
(From Poland, slightly metal flavored but very good)

The definition of progressive rock as I understood it (back in the late sixties) was any artist / band who did not conform to the mainstream pop music of the day.
This included tracks on LP's that were longer than the three minute radio requiremnets and often included the lyrics, beat, timing, instruments etc, were also considered outside the three minute pop single.

Early Asia, very much a AOR band geared for the US market in concept but absolutely nailed it regardless. Great band.

Punk really turned into post-punk, hardcore and alternative rock. Punk itself was like a shot in the arm that kicked of various new genres.

Hated anything by Genesis and Yes were tedious after 'Time and a Word'. As ever with these threads it depends on the definition of, in this case, Prog. I wouldn't count Floyd as prog, for example. Despite the now revisionist element of the genre, I still think it got pretty tedious very quickly. I can still handle a bit of Nice or King Crimson but I have to be in a very specific mood. It was no surprise Punk came along.

I've seen Hackett live countless times over the years.
He is fantastic and unique at both electric and classical. I saw him do a complete classical show at Saddlers Wells once upon a time with Mae McKenna and also The Panic Brothers!
The highlight had to be at Hammersmith about 3 years ago, when he finally stopped teasing us with odd snippets, and just did a whole show of all the old numbers everyone really wanted to hear under the Genesis Revisited banner.
If you don't have this already, needless to say, it comes highly recommended.

Gabriel's nuts ideas = better than anything by Collins. Though Seconds Out is a good band performance and "well" sung.
Hackett by miles. Before Genesis became "pop", Rutherford was simply copying Hackett to my ears. "Duke" is a good album. But nothing else, really, after Hackett left.
I know not of Yes, Gentle Giant, Enid and all that. Then again, I can't stand Led Zeppelin. Plant's wailing and words, fucking terrible.

The style of his singing. I notice it a lot on Seconds Out where a lot of the songs had originally been sung by Gabriel.
It diminished as newer songs replaced the old and Collins put his own stamp on things, and no direct comparison was possible any more.
